Banned Beauty
A documentation of breast ironing in Cameroon. Breast ironing is an attempt to flatten pubescent girls’ breasts with hot tools, by female family members, in hopes to make young women less sexual and more likely to fulfil an education.
About the Photographer
Heba Khamis (b. 1988) is based in Alexandria, Egypt. Heba recently received a diploma in Photojournalism from the Hochschule Hannover University in Germany. In 2016, Heba received a diploma from the Danish School of Media and Journalism in Denmark. She freelances for international clients such as The Associated press. Her work has been published in the New York Times and The Telegraph.
